Our take-home Opalescence option uses custom-fitted whitening trays made from precise impressions of your teeth, paired with prescription-strength Opalescence gel. You wear the trays at home — typically for a set period each day over one to two weeks — and progressively whiten your teeth at your own pace.
The custom fit of the trays is important. Generic tray systems from the store allow the gel to contact your gums, which can cause irritation and reduce effectiveness. Custom trays seat precisely against your teeth only, maximizing contact with the whitening gel and minimizing any soft tissue exposure.
Take-home trays also have a significant long-term advantage: once you have them, you can use them for periodic maintenance touch-ups using additional gel purchased through our practice. A single set of trays can keep your smile bright for years with minimal ongoing investment.
How long does Opalescence whitening last?
Professional whitening results typically last 1 to 3 years, depending on several factors:
- Diet — coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored foods will gradually re-stain teeth over time

Is Opalescence whitening safe?
Yes — when used as directed under dental supervision, Opalescence whitening is safe for most patients. The potassium nitrate and fluoride in the formula actively protect your enamel during treatment, which is why we prefer it over systems that simply bleach without protecting.
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during or after treatment. This is normal and typically resolves within a day or two. If sensitivity is a concern, we can adjust the whitening concentration and recommend pre-treatment strategies to keep you comfortable.
Before recommending whitening, we evaluate your teeth to make sure it is appropriate for your situation. If you have significant decay, gum disease, or existing restorations in visible areas, we will discuss those factors with you honestly before proceeding.
What whitening cannot do
Being straightforward with our patients is one of the most important things we do at 12 Oaks. Professional whitening delivers excellent results for the right candidates — but it has real limitations worth understanding:
- Crowns, veneers, and bonding — composite resin and porcelain do not respond to whitening. If you have visible restorations, they will stay their current shade while your natural teeth lighten, potentially creating a mismatch
- Intrinsic staining — staining from tetracycline antibiotics taken during tooth development, or from trauma that caused internal discoloration, typically does not respond to whitening alone
- Severe discoloration — patients with very dark or heavily stained teeth may get limited improvement from whitening and may be better served by veneers or bonding
During your consultation, we will assess your teeth honestly and tell you exactly what whitening can realistically achieve for you — and what other options might be worth considering if whitening alone will not get you where you want to be.
Whiten before other cosmetic work
One important sequencing tip: if you are considering any other cosmetic dental work — veneers, bonding, crowns — always complete your whitening first. We match the shade of any new restorations to your whitened teeth, ensuring everything looks consistent when the full treatment is complete.
If you place restorations before whitening, the existing restoration shade becomes your baseline — and you may not be able to whiten your natural teeth to match without replacing the restorations entirely.
